Itaewon, located in Seoul, is one of the most unique and ethnically mixed areas in Seoul. Many foreign travelers visit this area for the shopping, food, and wide variety of nightlife. One noted spot for foreigners to frequent is Club Spy. Located in the center of Itaewon, the vicinity is populated with numerous restaurants. Tourists can shop in the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing dinner, and then hit the club scene. Club Spy offers a lounge area separate from the dance floor, so people can relax after dancing. A glass wall divides the two spaces, yet creates the feeling of one large open area. The club’s atmosphere really heats up during the hours of 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. Some clubbers choose to stay out all night long and take the first subway home in the morning, while others take advantage of the nearby lodging facilities and hotels, like the Hamilton Hotel. Korea Tourism Organization employees’ Cho Eun Mi and Han Jung Pil set out for a night on the town in Itaewon to experience the club scene firsthand.

Eun Mi and Jung Pil stopped by Gecko’s Terrace & Garden for dinner and a drink before the club. The two enjoyed a relaxing dinner on the terrace. Note that there is a 10% tax on food and a 5% service tax. The restaurant is ideal for foreigners living in Korea; often more foreigners than Koreans can be found dining here.

Eun Mi and Jung Pil arrived a bit early and enjoyed some beer and small talk. As the hour approached midnight, the crowds began growing inside and they ventured out onto the dance floor. They later headed back to the lounge to rest their feet; continuing back and forth between the lounge and dance floor until 3:00 a.m.

Reporter : What did you think about the atmosphere at the club?

Eun Mi : I felt like I was in a Western-style club. Most of the people at the club were Westerners; I guess that’s why the manager of the club spoke English so well. The music, the people, there was just so much energy in the club.

Reporter : I have heard that most of the people here are European.

Eun Mi : Ah~. Actually, at clubs that Koreans go to, the dance floor starts to empty out around 9 p.m., but here the party really got started at around midnight. It seems that people drink less here and dance more.

Reporter : Jung Pil, what did you like most about this club?

Jung Pil : I liked that the dance floor and lounge area were separate. To be honest, I’m not much of a dancer and would rather just watch people dance. Therefore, the lounge area is perfect for me! I also like the reasonable liquor prices.
