| Introduction | ||
| Well-known Oriental medicine doctors of the mid-Joseon Dynasty, Ryu Ui-tae and his apprentice Heo Jun performed their great work in the areas of Sancheong and Mt. Jirisan. Heo Jun is a familiar figure to almost every Korean, and many TV dramas have retold his story. He also wrote Donguibogam, a medical compendium that became the foundation of traditional Korean medicine. This area, which abounds with various medicinal herbs, is therefore known as the birthplace of traditional herbal medicine, and where advanced medical techniques were developed. The Oriental Medicinal Herb Festival at Jirisan is one of many festivals held with the aim to offer visitors the opportunity to experience the excellent, health-giving benefits of traditional herbal medicines made in Mt. Jirisan and Sancheong. Event Programs: The Oriental Medicinal Herb Festival at Jirisan is definitely customized for people living in modern society who are very interested in their health. Here, the general public can learn more about medicinal herbs with displays of cuisine made with medicinal herbs as well as medicinal plants that can easily be grown at home. Tourists and Korean visitors alike will enjoy a tour of the Medicinal Herb Exhibition Hall with displays of various medicinal herbs, including explanation labels. Just for fun, tourists can have a souvenir photo taken in typical Oriental doctor/nurse garb. And they may want to sample jakseol tea from Sancheong or try a free acupuncture treatment. Why not sample a medicinal herb cocktail, herbal medicine tea, medicinal liquor, and medicinal rice cakes? Or stop to see the oriental medicine anatomical chart. Visitors can receive medical treatment from an Oriental medicine doctor garbed in Joseon Dynasty attire, including a free examination and treatment; a prescription; diagnosis; and a free mud-pack and infrared ray treatment. Other festival attractions will include performances, nongangnori (Korean traditional folk music that farmers played together) contests, and singing contests. Major Highlights: The best part of the Oriental Medicinal Herb Festival at Jirisan is the wide selection of experiential programs. Even if traditional herbal medicine is new to you, you will be surprised by its beneficial effects. Participation is easy, especially since most programs are free! Why not take advantage of this revitalizing medical treatment while you are visiting the festival? |
